Summer League & High School Prep
Summer League & High School Prep (formerly Speed School) is our semi-competitive program for middle school and high school athletes who are newer to competitive swimming and/or are interested in a 3 day/week commitment. This program is ideal for athletes participating in multiple sports and those who want to train primarily for competition on summer swim leagues or high school teams. Practices are designed to build skills, speed and endurance in the sport of swimming. There is no competition expectation for this group. Prep group athletes will be registered as FLEX under USA swimming, which means they are eligible to compete in up to 3 swim meets per calendar year. Athletes cannont renew FLEX memberships.

BVSSL swimmers who are considering competitive year-round swimming:
August → October
Swim with the appropriate competitive group (Age Group or Junior), meeting all practice and meet expectations.
Last week of October
Swimmer/parent/coach meet and determine which of the following paths is best for your swimmer:
Pathway 1 -
Recommended for swimmers who love the sport, work hard, but are not already winning every race over the summer.
Swim with Age Group or Junior during the school year, and swim exhibition with your BVSSL team during the summer. Swimmers aged 12+ are encouraged to get involved in coaching the younger age groups on their summer team.
Pathway 2 - Recommended for swimmers who are already dominating at the summer league level.*
Practice with Age Group or Junior 3x/wk, attend meets at a spectator to cheer for your teammates, and then go get your city meet trophy the following summer. This option is only available for a swimmer's first season in the Junior group, and is only available for swimmers who are competing for top 5 high point in their age group at BVSSL City Champs. After one season, swimmers who wish to continue with Junior group must commit to meeting the group practice and competition expectations throughout the school year or move into the SLHS prep group.
Pathway 3 -
Recommended for swimmers who want to swim summer league & for their high school, but are not interested in club swimming at the Senior level.
Switch to the Summer League / High School Prep group in November.
*A note from Coach Skyler:
BVSSL rules limit swimmers to 3 practices/wk and zero meets for 5 months from November through May in order to be eligible to score points at summer league meets and compete at City Meet finals. It is my belief that this policy (especially restricting competition) benefits only those who are already dominating at city meet every summer.
I LOVE summer league. I was a summer league swimmer for 9 years. I coached my childhood summer league team for 15 years. I also understand the importance of consistency, competition, and being part of a team. The lessons your child will learn through competing are infinitely more valuable than points and ribbons.
If you are thinking about getting involved BVSSL governance and would like to discuss ways to preserve the success of summer only swimmers while allowing summer swimmers to fully experience year-round swimming, please reach out - I would love to brainstorm with you.
